UAE RoHS vs EU RoHS

UAE RoHS is Cabinet Decision No. 10 of 2017 on the restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, which took effect January 1, 2018. It is administered by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), which took over the role of the former Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA).

How UAE RoHS differs from EU RoHS

  • Substances - the same 10 substances as EU RoHS 3: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE and four phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP).
  • Registration - products must be registered with the UAE authority through a notified body before they are placed on the market. EU RoHS relies on self-declaration.
  • Evidence - registration requires a Declaration of Conformity and a test report from an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory using IEC 62321 test methods, covering the product or its critical components.
  • Scope - broadly mirrors EU RoHS, with UAE-specific exemptions.
